A charming hotel near Aurillac

Daily pleasures that add up to a home from home

Mid-way between Conques and Aurillac, with the drama of the Auvergne volcanoes on one side and soft beauty of the Lot valley on the other, the Auberge de la Tour is an invitation to travel through history, culture and gourmet dining. At the heart of the medieval centre of Marcolès, with its "Petite Cité de Caractère" historic classification, young proprietor Renaud Darmanin have added a hint of contemporary colour and character to this beautiful and superbly restored 17th Century residence.

The charm of a hotel in Cantal...

An inn in a beautiful 17th Century residence

This large, granite-built building, with the traditional Cantal "lauze" stone-tiled roof, has always been a hotel-restaurant. Formerly known as the Hôtel Alidière, it was bought by the Marcolès municipality, which carried out the major works of renovation. In 2010, Renaud Darmanin took over the business and opened the Auberge de la Tour.

The vegetable garden & orchard

A little slice of paradise!

The inventive Chef finds further inspiration at the heart the vegetable garden and family orchard. Vegetables, fruit and flowers, in a cornucopia of colour. Aromatic herbs abound: chives, mint, lemon-balm, lemon-verbena, thyme, ground-ivy, verbena, mountain savory, borage, nasturtium, hyssop... In the orchard: redcurrants, pears, apples, quince, raspberries, grapes... for home-made jams and jellies (served with cheese and at breakfast).

The countryside around is also generous with good produce: in the autumn hunting season there are apples and pears - true-bred from un-grafted stock, mushrooms, wild fruit and chestnuts... Colours, scents and flavours that will soon find their way onto your plate.
